Simpliphi Lithium Battery – Renogy Battery

Simpliphi Lithium Battery – Renogy Battery

SimpliPhi Power’s Background – Company History

SimpliPhi Power, based in California, was formed in 2010 by Stuart Lennox and Catherine Von Burg (currently CEO). They’ve concentrated on lithium battery production, as well as uninterruptible power supply and battery-powered generators for off-grid electricity.

Briggs & Stratton just purchased the company, which was previously privately held. Briggs and Stratton is a gasoline engine manufacturer based in Wisconsin that produces a variety of outdoor power equipment. Private equity firm KPS Capital Partners owns Briggs and Stratton, which is valued at about US$1.4 billion.

Simliphi, in comparison to some of the larger battery makers, has a limited manufacturing capacity situated in Oxnard, California. Their lithium ferro-phosphate chemistry-based batteries are sold in various countries throughout the world, with models ranging from 1kWh to 2MWh.

Simpliphi Power does not have an office in Australia, hence their batteries are only available through DPA Solar, their distributor. Their batteries will soon be available in more areas thanks to their new parent firm.

Simpliphi Lithium Battery Fundamentals

Simpliphi Lithium Battery : According to SimpliPhi Power’s datasheet, the PHI 3.8-MTM Battery uses the safest Lithium Ion chemistry available, Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP). Customers are not exposed to cobalt or explosive dangers, as evidenced by their UL9540 certification for a variety of their items. The risk of thermal runaway, fire propagation, operating temperature limits, and toxic coolants is decreased by removing cobalt from their batteries’ chemistry.

The integrated Battery Management System (BMS) is designed to connect with and optimize the performance of the batteries, and it can be used in both residential and commercial applications – on and off the grid.

All industry-standard inverters and charge controllers are said to be compatible with their products. The PHI 3.8-M Battery is a balance-of-system battery that optimizes any power generation source, including solar, wind, grid, and generators. The battery can supply backup power in the event of a grid failure, which is critical for many potential consumers.

The battery is available in two voltages: 48V and 24V, allowing it to work with a variety of off-grid setups. They have a working temperature range of -20 to 60 degrees Celsius, allowing them to safely tolerate Australia’s scorching environmental extremes. On that note, they’re made of lithium ion phosphate, which is well-known for its chemical safety in batteries as well as its extended cycle life. It’s only meant to be used indoors and has an IP32 rating.

The batteries can be scaled, according to SimpliPhi, who has a case study of a 308kWh system using the 3.8kWh PHI module as the solution’s building block

Key Features of the SimpliPhi Battery

The SimpliPhi battery has a lot of features that are worth mentioning:

Discharge depth of 100 percent

The PHI 3.8-M Battery has a 100 percent Depth of Discharge (DoD). This puts SimpliPhi ahead of some of its competitors, such as Sonnen (90 percent DoD and Alpha ESS) (90 percent DoD).

When purchasing a solar battery, the Department of Defense (DoD) is a crucial consideration. It’s the amount of the battery that has been discharged in comparison to its declared capacity. The higher the DoD, the more stored energy you have available to use, and thus the greater the potential you gain from it.

In this regard, it is not suggested that users totally empty their batteries because they only have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles. This is why a manufacturer would tell you the DoD as a guide to how much you can discharge it. It’s worth noting that there’s a link between cycle life and DoD, i.e. the more frequently you discharge the battery to its maximum DoD, the shorter its lifespan will be.

Capacity that Scales

As previously stated, these batteries are modular, allowing you to join them in parallel to increase the nominal capacity of your storage system. The benefit of this is that it allows you to extend your solar energy storage capacity in the future. This provides a low-cost entry point for consumers who don’t want to give up their future alternatives of becoming completely self-sufficient as batteries grow more affordable or energy needs change.

Many battery modules can be safely coupled together, according to SimpliPhi. They have case studies of 12 batteries linked together in a single enclosure, and they can link numerous enclosures together as well.

Adaptable Use

The PHI 3.8-M Battery is suitable for both off-grid and hybrid applications. This provides you, the consumer, with a great deal of options in terms of how you use it. It caters to a variety of applications, whether you want to totally rely on constructing a self-contained solar power system or you want to retrofit it to an existing system. Just keep in mind the inverters that are compatible with the ones listed above.

SimpliPhi Power box batteries come with a one-year warranty in Australia.

The warranty is 10 years on a prorated basis, according to SimpliPhi’s warranty documents, when installed and operated according to the specifications provided in the SimpliPhi Installation Manual and applicable Integration Guide.

We believe there are a few points of the warranty that are worth mentioning:

Discharging PHI batteries below the 100 percent Depth of Discharge (DOD) voids the batteries’ warranty. SimpliPhi warrants the SimpliPhi Power Product at 80 percent or better of its original-rated capacity for the ten-year Limited Warranty Period.

While the ten-year warranty does not mention a battery cycle life, at ordinary operating conditions, the estimated cycle life rating is 10,000 cycles when a maximum of 80% DOD is maintained, 5,000 cycles at 90% DOD, and 3,500 cycles at 100% DOD.

During the Limited Warranty Period, if the Simpliphi Lithium Battery is discovered to be defective due to any manufacturing flaw in materials or workmanship, SimpliPhi Power will, in its sole discretion, either I repair the SimpliPhi battery or (ii) replace the SimpliPhi battery.

SimpliPhi Power may offer, at its discretion, to replace the Product with a new Product of equal function and performance or to credit the remaining depreciated value of the Product toward the purchase of a new Product if a replacement Product is no longer available on the market.

It’s unclear from their warranty literature whether you can make a claim through any authorized resellers in Australia. You can, however, file a claim with Simpliphi right here:

A home battery plan is currently in effect in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory.

The South Australian Home Battery Scheme provides up to $4,000 per installed battery to qualifying South Australian citizens.

The New South Wales Home Battery Scheme provides qualified homes with a $9000 interest-free loan to install a solar battery.

The Victorian government offers a maximum discount of $4,174 off the battery sale price to individuals who qualify under the Solar Homes Program. The next round of battery rebates will be available on September 2nd, 2020.

Under the Next Generation Energy Storage programmed, the Australian Capital Territory government offers a $825 per kilowatt-hour incentive (kW). A typical household with a 5kW system would be eligible for around $4,000 in rebates.
