Phono Solar Overview – Company History

In 2018, Phono Solar Australia changed its name to Sumec Phono Solar Australia to reflect its parent firm, the Sumec Group. The China National Machinery Industry Corporation owns Sumec Group, which is a subsidiary of China National Machinery Industry Corporation (also known as Sinomach). Sinomach is a Chinese state-owned company that was created in 1997 in Beijing.

In 2008, Phono Solar was founded with the goal of producing polycrystalline and then monocrystalline solar panels. Their manufacturing facilities are located in Nanjing, China, and have a claimed capacity of 1.6GW (Bloomberg).

According to the data in Solar Choice’s database of solar installation offerings, Phono Solar has a small presence in the Australian market. They have yet to lease a permanent office in Australia, and their website is currently quite simple (and eerily identical to Hyundai Solar’s Australian website). Supply Partners, the exclusive distributor of Phono Solar panels in Australia, provides warranty services.

What is the difference between a Bloomberg Tier 1 Solar Panel and a Bloomberg Tier 2 Solar Panel?

It’s vital to note right away that Bloomberg’s infamous tier 1 designation has nothing to do with the quality of solar panels. It’s just an assessment of the manufacturer’s bankability based on publicly available financial data. If the company is a significant, well-known manufacturer, this should offer you an indication.

Phono Solar is a Bloomberg Tier 1 company.

Who is the top performer at PV Evolution Labs?

PV Evolution Labs independently tests solar panel dependability with the help of DNV GL. The tests are completely voluntary, with solar panel producers paying to take part. This testing procedure is well-known around the world, and it accurately reflects the solar panel’s performance.

In the most recent research, Phono Solar was named a top performer for thermal cycling, LID+LETID, and potential-induced deterioration.

Why is it vital to have an office in Australia?

End-users benefit from solar firms establishing an Australian office because they have someone to contact domestically who can help with warranty claims or product concerns. Most well-known brands in Australia have a customer service office with two to ten employees.

If something goes wrong, your installation may claim that they will take care of everything. Given the number of solar installers who have gone out of business in the previous ten years, choosing a solar panel with proper Australian support staff makes sense.

Phono Solar has an office listed at a Barangaroo co-working facility and can be reached at (02) 8114 4516. This ServCorp-run co-working space offers ‘virtual offices,’ which give you the perks of a prestigious address without committing to a physical location.

Technologies for Phono Solar Panels

All of the panels they now sell in Australia are resistant to salt mist corrosion and may be installed in any area.

On the Australian market, Phono now offers two series of panels for residential solutions: Premium module and Twin Plus module series. They can manufacture panels with up to 20.58 percent efficiency at the time of editing this article (December 2020). (Twin Plus 450W).

The Clean Energy Council (listed under the name of Phono Energy Solutions Co Ltd) has authorized the majority of Phono solar panels for the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme — Australia’s home solar rebate program.

Module Twin Plus

This monocrystalline series comes in two sizes: 120 cells and 144 cells, and is suited for both residential and commercial applications.

The monocrystalline silicon cells employ PERC technology, which was developed at UNSW and can achieve efficiencies of up to 19.9%.

The modules have a temperature coefficient of -0.38%/°C, putting them somewhat ahead of the average tier. a single panel

Datasheets and modules:

Twin Plus is a series of twin beds.

There are an additional 120 Cell and 144 Cell versions in the Twin Plus “Series,” which have somewhat larger silicon cells and greater overall size.

In addition to the larger dimensions, the solar panels’ efficiency has grown to 20.58 percent (despite the removal of PERC technology), implying that the panels have a significant increase in Wp rating over the Twin Plus “Module”

The Twin Plus Series is also advertised as having an optional 5-year warranty extension (bringing the total guarantee to 20 years), but we’ll go over that in more detail in the warranty section below. Modules and data sheets:

The Warranty Program at Phono Solar – It’s not quite as good as it appears.

A product and performance guarantee is included with solar panels. The product warranty is intended to cover manufacturing flaws in the panel that result in damage or malfunction, whereas the performance warranty ensures a minimum quantity of output from the solar panel, which normally decreases annually due to natural silicon degradation.

The majority of solar panels on the market offer a product guarantee of 10 to 12 years and a performance warranty of 25 years. Phono’s product warranty was raised to 15 years in 2019, with a 25-year performance warranty for all ranges.

For their 370W (PS370M4-20/UH) and 450W (PS450M4-24/TH) panels, Phono Solar also offers an optional 5-year warranty extension. Any mention of this on their website is marked with an asterisk (*), but no further information is supplied. The warranty extension for the Twin Plus series is limited to “hot spots and seal failure” and is solely for residential users, according to the product data sheet. Their warranty agreement makes no mention of this extension. In our judgment, there is no value in this claim, and we believe they may be in violation of the Trade Practices Act by presenting false information.

The warranty for Sumec Phono Solar is handled by Supply Partners, the company’s exclusive distributor in Australia. This isn’t as good as some of the more popular tier 1 solar panels, which have warranty claims handled, processed, and resolved by Australian workers in a permanent office.

Should I Invest in Phono Solar Panels?

In summary, we think of Phono Solar’s panels as a mid-range alternative that could be worth considering if they’re supplied at a good price.

There are some encouraging indicators in terms of quality, with their panels appearing on DNV GL’s top performer’s list in 2018 and 2019, though it’s unclear why they weren’t able to maintain that status in 2020.

Most of their mid-range competitors can’t match their 15-year product warranty. They have Sumec Group and Sinomach backing, which has led Bloomberg to classify them as a tier 1 bankable manufacturer. If your installer goes out of business, you may have trouble filing a claim under this coverage because their warranty work is done by a distributor.

It would be great to see Phono Solar lease some office space in Australia and build a warranty claim process that end consumers can easily use.
