BYD Overview – Company History

The acronym BYD stands for “Build Your Dream.” Chuanfu Wnag created it in February 1995. It is a Chinese manufacturing firm with headquarters in Shenzhen, China. BYD is most known in Australia for its solar batteries, although the business also makes commercial and passenger electric vehicles, rail transportation, and solar panels.

BYD was listed on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges in 2002 and 2011, respectively, with a revenue and market value of more than RMB 100 billion. It presently employs more than 225,000 people. Renewable energy (including batteries) accounts for 7% of overall product revenue, despite the fact that the company is obviously enormous. In reality, BYD’s website, which focuses on its other product line, makes no mention of solar panels.

Most solar panel manufacturers who enter the Australian market focus on setting up distribution channels first, then on customer service. As a result, many disgruntled consumers are attempting to contact Chinese headquarters in order to claim their 10-year product warranty.

Relying on your solar installer isn’t always a good idea, as many residential solar installers (including the big ones) have gone out of business before the systems they install have even been installed.

Solar Panels from BYD are now available in Australia.

The Clean Energy Council (listed under the name of BYD Company Limited) has certified 40 BYD solar panels for the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme — Australia’s home solar rebate scheme. However, at the time of writing, the following two solar panel models were the only ones available:

PHK-30-SERIES BYD

The PHK-30-Series comprises 5 busbars and a half-cut solar cell that uses new technology to boost module efficiency while also providing a more attractive appearance, making it appropriate for rooftop installations.

There are 120 polycrystalline solar half cells in total. Polycrystalline solar cells are noted for being cost-effective, however, they are not as efficient as monocrystalline cells. As a result, the rated module efficiency is 16.61 percent, which is below the industry standard for most solar panels.

The solar panel has a 3.2mm tempered glass sheet with AR coating on top and is compatible with an MC4 connector. These features ensure that this module is compatible with today’s BOS in the PV installation sector.

solar panelThe MHK-30-SERIES also comes with 5 busbars and a half-cut solar cell, which uses modern technology to boost module performance while also providing a more appealing aesthetic, making it ideal for rooftop installation.

The 120 monocrystalline solar cells have a 19.03 percent cell efficiency, which is close to the average of contemporary solar panel technology. This panel’s wattage ranges from 290W to 320W, depending on the model.

 

Warranty provided by BYD

A product and performance guarantee is included with solar panels. The product warranty, which is normally 10 years for most solar panel manufacturers, is designed to cover manufacturing flaws in the panel that result in damage or malfunction. All BYD panels come with a normal product warranty of 10-12 years, which is comparable to what the solar panel market would expect.

After 25 years, the performance warranty ensures a set level of output for the life of the panel, usually 80-82 percent of the nameplate output. For all ranges, BYD Solar provides a 25-year performance warranty, with a guaranteed output of 80 percent (for polycrystalline modules) and 80.2 percent (for monocrystalline modules) beyond that time, putting them above the market’s minimal expectation.

Despite having an Australian office, BYD’s warranty literature specifies that to claim a warranty, you must contact Gavin Tong at their Chinese office.

Pros

  2. Premium solar panels come with a 30-year linear performance warranty from BYD, the world’s top provider of rechargeable batteries.

Should I invest in BYD Solar Panels?

BYD solar panels are geared at the lower end of the market, in our opinion. In terms of technical specifications, the solar panels they currently provide in Australia are at the lowest end of the market. BYD, being a larger firm with a strong and steady presence in various different sectors, may present a more bankable choice than most small-scale solar panel makers.

If it’s within your financial capabilities and budget, we recommend investing a little extra to find a Bloomberg tier 1 solar panel manufacturer with a larger company focused on creating high-quality solar panels and a better warranty claim process for Australian customers.

The power station in Queensland with a rated output of 75.01MW is the only solar project featured on BYD’s website for the Australian market. The project, which employs BYD PV module 330phk and is located in Queens, Australia 4660 Isis River, Lanzhou, is the outcome of a collaboration between BYD and Childers Solar Pty Ltd.
