How have you observed SHADOW BANDS just before & after TOTALITY phase of solar eclipse on July 22, 2009?
How long did it last ? As I’ve observed, it was of about 10 seconds. I observed on a wall of light colour b coz the sun was only < 25 degree of angle of elevation above the horizon. The rippling bright & dark wave pattern was not all the time continuous, rather, it came in burst or pulses, not all the time faint but never very sharp too. It was like many fibrous snakes, one over other moving fast in a direction perpendicular to the direction of moon’s shadow movement. No video of any solar ecliptic shadow bands is available on internet of that much or bigger duration so far. This was visible just before & after totality phase of eclipse. The view was very nice. No video recorder of that eclipse has shown anywhere on internet so far. If you are keen on watching beautiful celestial diamond ring, you will miss the chance of watching shadow bands. I momentarily watched diamond rings & fucused more attention on the bands, mostly ignored by people & media. Do you have more informations to better or refine my observations ? Chinese & Japanese people must have better observations. Most of the observers were from Shanghai city, the biggest ever city having total solar eclipse in history of longest duration in 21 st century.
To Dave M : Sir, I’ve observed total solar eclipse for the third time as this time, it was of longest duration, so was the duration of shadow bands. It is due to turbulence in the earth’s atmosphere when small amount of light remained passes through that. It was earlier thought to be like shadow bands at the bottom of any swimming pool when air shakes the water susface but this time I observed, it was characteristically different from that , all the time looking like moving from north to south.’ U Tube’ & ‘Google’ have some recordings but not of that much duration & shadows as I’ve observed this time.

I have observed shadow bands on 24th October 1995 total Solar eclipse
Just before totality. That eclipse lasted only 55 seconds and I was observing from a village 23kilometers from Alwar Rajastan in India.
We put a white cloth on the ground expecting this phenomenon.
Later when I checked the newspaper reports there was no mention about this phenomenon.
