would solar be ok?

A solar system would not hold enough energy to power a flood light for any length of time. An average flood light bulb uses about 75 watts of energy. Unless you don’t care about cost, this option is out. The solar power setup would cost hundreds of dollars.

Go with a normal halogen flood light with motion detector.

based on your experience which ones are good?

I can not remember the brand name but I got it from radio shack about 10 years ago. I am sure it was a radio shack brand and it is still working fine. However it seems to be dim in the morning hours now. I think it is about worn out but the light is the same bulb and I have it in my open car port I just put the solar panel flat on the flat roof. Then I run the cord inside to the beam and screwed the light to the side of the beam. It is dirty and dusty but works great and is very bright about like a back up light on a car, well not in the morning now.

I hope I was helpful and I hope they still have them and have not figured out how to make them only last a year like all the other products out there.

Many I’ve looked at get bad reviews because they arent bright enough.

Solar lights are no good! Every brand and type I have seen fall apart and stop working after one season. But if you have to use them, buy the least expensive so you can buy new ones when they break.
