home-made GREENHOUSE question! HELP!!!?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

i built a 4 foot by 4 foot greenhouse. i used cheap wood and lined each panel with clear vinyl. now that i have it together…i don’t know what else to do!!!

do i need to poke holes for air circulation?

do i need to open the door (i made a door) when the sun is out and close it at night?

do i need to get a fan? and not open the door?

do i need to throw a blanket or something over it at night to keep it warm:?

can i use my solar garden lights for warmth at night?!?!?

i have started about 150 plants in my home and they are not getting much sunlight!!

all flowers and a few shrubs/foliage

help please!!

anyone with info that knows about this!!
i live on the coast of north carolina if location helps with any answers!!

You will need holes for air circulation, yes. I wouldn’t bother with a fan unless you mean to leave the door closed. Make sure you open it when it’s hot though: Otherwise you risk cooking your baby plants.

You’ll need to get a source of light, too, if you’re growing sun-loving plants. Some plants prefer shade so the lack of light won’t bother them.

Sorry, but I think several of these ideas are rather juvenile, while many others are outright illegal . . . and not much fun considering a scavenger hunt is supposed to be both challenging AND fun.
You might consider combining a scavenger hunt with a road rally, where you use different kinds of measurements (i.e. miles, kilometers, nautical miles, time, etc.) to get to and from different points, and when you get to these points, you have to answer questions relating to that area. For example, I did one out in the country that, if followed correctly, took us to a country cemetery and we had to answer questions that were found on tombstones. If you did something like this, you would have to do several run-throughs to make sure your directions and instructions were correct.
Also, you could ask people to get things like a silver dollar, an oak leaf, i.e. things that aren’t stolen or involve breaking any laws.
I LOVE both scavenger hunts and rallys and have been on both.
Good luck!

Have you ever had a profound spiritual experience because of Nature? (Independant of organized religion)?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Have you ever just been looking at something in Nature like a certain bird or flower or natural phenomenon like the Northern Lights… and had a profoundly spiritual experience brought on by the incredible beauty, complexity or uniqueness of the sight?? For example, when I see the Aurora Borealis it stirs my emotions in a way that is hard to describe… it comes from thinking about how it happens, its incredible when you realize that the particles causing the beautiful lights are carried to the earth on solar winds from the eruption of solar flares on the sun and funneled along the magnetic lines of force of our planet where they collide with atmospheric atoms and molecules and ionize them, then the energy is released from the ionized atoms and molecules in the form of visible light…. oxygen produces green or red light, nitrogen produces blue light. Its incredibly profound when you think about it and very spiritual in a way. Has anyone else experienced this??
lol yes mullah you inspired this question! No I had not heard of Andy goldsworthy but not that you have brought him to my attention I find his art very much to my liking Thank you!!

I’ve never seen the northern lights, but Ii have felt nature although i don’t think of it as a spiritual feeling.
Sitting by a creek bank watching water flow over a few high places in the creek(rocks) rocks causing a small waterfall.

I stopped fishing and just sit there the rest of the afternoon thinking of how at one time this planet was a hot boiling mass of gases and liquids which cooled down to form the seas and land.
I thought of the many millions of collisions of small metors, dust astroids and other space derbis which created the earths present form and how close the earth time and time again must have come to being distroyed.
And out of all of this life came about, and I think it is because life is not really a mystery. It is I think a natural event that must happens if the right conditions are there as it was in earths young history.
This little creek gave to me an ideal insite to how our world was formed, and I still today sometimes can hear the rustling of the water over the rocks, and remember that evening I spent listening to nature and of what she told me.
Thinking of that day and listening to what our benefactor nature had to say leads me to beleive the entire universe must be alive with life on other worlds as life isn’t really a mystery and spiritual and spirits are really just soemthing we call things we don’t understand.
I know what you are saying and it’s nice to know that you understand how nature really works, and you are able to unravel her secrets and feel with nature.

should i be upset about my garden?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I have a somewhat large flower garden about 4 acres of exotic trees and beautiful flowers and a somewhat small lake pond with lillys and ducks . it all started a few years ago with my mother and i and it consumes alot of time but it is truly breathtaking with solar lights and benches it is really beautiful. but here is my problem i had a friend that asked if her friend can take some pre wedding photos in my yard due to it is beautiful well between her the bride and the photo person i have had 14 other brides this week call to use my garden i am not to fond of people in my yard. and damage my plants. well i had the photo person also call me and say well i can always charge anyone that uses my garden for the day i thought about it and figured it could be a good idea due to it could help buy more plants and mulch that cost alot of money, but wonder how much should i charge these people to use my yard. or just give it to them as a gift and alow these people to use the garden ?

I would allow the friend, maybe, but deny anyone else. It is a gift or favor to your friend, but the others are too much. People tramping through the garden wears on you quick, also there is a lot of wear and tear on the grass and other plants. Worse is if one of your plants ends up disappearing, which can happen.

If I was to charge it would be $100-$150 cash, because it would deter some people in price, some wouldn’t want to pay that much in cash, it makes it worth it to you to have them in your garden for however long the shoot will take, and if you have takers you’ll be able to cover any damaged plants. I wouldn’t allow any haggling, because they are asking to intrude on something that is important and special to you. If someone was bossy or demanding it would be a flat denial, too.

It might sound harsh doing it that way, but it’s obvious that it is pricking a nerve with you. While charging might cover cost of plants and mulch there is also the chance that if someone is unhappy they might demand their money back, or if they got hurt want to claim against/sue your homeowners insurance…or you. I really don’t think it would be worth it. I would just tell the people you are honored that they would like to use your garden for their pictures but you don’t want to have a ton of people on your land.

Keeping up?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Next door’s water feature was bad enough, a-bubblin’ and a-grubblin’, all night. Now they’ve added a dozen solar powered plastic flower lamps lighting up me bedroom. Do we want Disneyland taking over the English country garden?

Get some light blocking blinds, and enjoy the bubblin and grubblin water…it’s supposed to be soothing.

lanscape lighting?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

i am wanting to buy a combintaion set of lights for two trees in my yard and to light up my flower beds, there are so many out there it is hard to choose from, does anyone have or know of good affordable lights low voltage, not solar landscaping lights.

Generally, plastic landscape lights are cheapest, metal are more expensive, and solar are the most expensive. Also, getting complete kits (including lights, cable, and transformer) is a lot cheaper than buying the parts piecemeal.

Another consideration is light bulb power. Standard low-voltage bulbs come in 4, 7, and 11 watts. The more wattage, the higher the light output. But, you also need a larger transformer to run higher powered lights (more expensive). Spotlights generally use halogen-type bulbs that come in 10, 20, 25, 30, and 50-watt sizes. Again, the higher the wattage, the more light you get, but at increased cost for the transformer.

Personally, I don’t care for the solar lights. They usually have one LED in them and they aren’t very bright. Sure they save energy. But, they’re more expensive and you will need more lights to get a given amount of luminescence. They also put out an artificial looking light, because they come in either bright white or amber (trying to simulate the glow of incandescent bulbs).

Just go to your favorite home inprovement store and look at the lighting packages they have for sale. You should be able to pick up a plastic 10- or 12-light set (several tiered walkway lights, plus a few spotlights, cable, and transformer) for about $120 or so. Although, you may need extra cable and wire nuts for splicing the feeder cable, too.

What can I do to prevent my neighbors basketball from landing on and damaging my property?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

They have a portable hoop with the back facing my property. When the ball is missed it lands on my property whereby the children constantly walk through my grass. My landscaping includes solar lights, pebbles and lava rocks, trellis’ and most recently flowers. Two lights have been broken and rocks repeatedly scattered. The father said on 3 occasions he realizes the problem and he will build something to keep it from occurring. He said this over a year ago. Th e wife said she realizes it looks terrible but I "just have to deal with it." The police said there is nothing they can do if it is not intentional. Community relations has only sent letters and not been very helpful. I think it is common courtesy not to offend your neighbors property, intentional or not. This is exactly why we have backyards and parks for playing basketball. I did not expect this to happen in the suburbs or anywhere that people are trying to keep up their home and property. It is frustrating for me to repeatedly spend my time and money because of someone else’s actions or lack of. They were even given the suggestion by police to turn the hoop the other way. There response was we don’t want it to mess up our lawn. But I guess it’s o.k. to run through your neighbors.

If it comes into your yard just yell across "If this thing comes over here again it will belong to me" then chuck it back over.

What is a good flower bush that only grows about 2 feet tall?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I am wanting to outline my driveway with a Colorado Blue spruce then a flower bush then a solar spot light then another flower bush then another colorado blue spruce and keep repaeting that on both sides. So I wanted to know a pretty flowering bush that at most grows to 2 foot tall, I prefer 1′ -1 1/2 foot , that goes great with a colorado blue spruce.

If the area is in the shade of the trees, then Skimmia, or Azalea would be a good choice.
For sun areas Spirea, Viburnum, Weigela, Genista, Heather, Daphne, Leucothoe, Pieris, Potentilla, Rock Rose, and Shrub Rose.
Most shrubs don’t bloom for very long. It is best to pick an evergreen shrub, if it is to be on "display" on your driveway.
Give it plenty of room away from your Blue Spruce, because the tree roots will take over and kill the shrubs when they are larger. The shrubs can be maintained to the desired height by pruning.
