Are solar digital watches reliable or not? ?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

I have seen a cheap solar digital watch, which I like a lot! But I can’t find myself without having the time, or waking up and the watch is blank! Are they reliable?

How can I "charge" it? If I was in a room with lights on, would that charge? Or does it need sunlight?

Anything about them I should know?

Thank you for reading, I hope you answer – 5 stars for best answer.

The specs for a good brand of solar digital watch says it will keep good time for up to 6 months in a dark place, like a drawer or something.
I can’t say for your cheap brand. Read the specifications on the watch and see what they claim. But like anything, you’ll probably get what you pay for. Don’t expect any cheap watch to last very long.

Solar Lawn Lights?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Help!! I just bought a house and need 20 or more lawn lights. Does anyone know of a good site to purchase these lights in bulk….meaning the price will be cheaper rather than buying from a retail store like Target.

Sure you want Solar lights? Because, they arent very bright…none of them! They shine more like a night light. Plus, they need full sun all day or they wont shine long at night. Plus, you cant use them in the winter if you live in a cold climate, it will drain the battery and they wont work.

Have you considered installing a regular electrical light set? They are easy to install and use…you just plug the unit into an outdoor outlet and put the spotlights where you want. Most come with an automatic timer that turns them on and off when you want. I wouldnt buy a plastic set though, i would get a metal one, i have had both and the metal one i have now has lasted longer than the plastic ones did. The bulbs are easy to change too, you just unscrew the front and put a new bulb in.

How Does Concentrated Solar Ray from Mirrors embedded in a parabolic dish works? Can Steam Be Generated?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Are there any manufacturers in the world who supply the system at a cheaper cost? Any other alternative for getting steam using solar light for steam cooking.

Simple But Elegant concentrator Technology for Solar Systems
Small 1cmx1cm mirrors are fixed on a parabolic shaped dish and the sun is tracked thru a mechanical clock and the concentrated single ray is directed on to a pipe which is pumped with water and the high temperatures of 550 degree centigrade heats up the water in the pipe and thereby resulting in steam which is fed to a steam turbine and extract electricity too.
Germans have developed huge systems in the world.

Is there a way to make my own solar lighting for my outside garden–CHEAP??

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Like, with materials from Home Depot? Oh, and keep it simple!
Sure there is– YOU just don’t know it :P I’ve seen clocks running due to the energy produced from a potato !
so you’re saying no potato solar lights? wahhhhhhhhh :(

Sadly, it will cost far more to buy component parts than to buy a cheap ready-made solar lighting system.

My Solar Garden lights keep getting stolen?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Every solar light I have in the front yard keeps getting stolen . I keep the cheap lights out there for that reason , except for one … my house number sign which is a solar light as well . That at least keeps getting returned by the neighbors . Is there a good theft deterrent out there … these are mainly disappearing by drunk teenagers that walk by in the middle of the night . Any good suggestions ???

So you’ve spent how much on these lights so far? Here is what I would do. Buy this light for $29.00 (see link). it’s a little motion sensor light. put it on a small post or someplace where if some one who walks up will set it off. It may scare the kids off. I’m not saying it will work but you can try it.

otherwise I’ve seen a motion sensor lawn sprinkler for gardens. Rabbits, squirrel etc. You’d have to check around on that one.

What types of solar cells does most garden lights use?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I was just wondering what type (specific chemicals) of solar panels do most typical cheap solar garden lights use.

Hey Sea, most solar garden lights are compact units. Each individual light comes complete with panel, light sensor, battery, and LED. Other solar lights come as sets where each light is connected to one solar panel. These sets can be placed in the shade as long as the panel receives adequate sunlight.

The basic component of a solar cell is pure silicon, which is not pure in its natural state. Pure silicon is derived from such silicon dioxides as quartzite gravel (the purest silica) or crushed quartz.

The resulting pure silicon is then doped (treated with) with phosphorous and boron to produce an excess of electrons and a deficiency of electrons respectively to make a semiconductor capable of conducting electricity. The silicon disks are shiny and require an anti-reflective coating, usually titanium dioxide.
