Outdoor Solar Lights: Why Are My Nighbors Scrambling For Them?

By: Phineas Duru

Solar lights are one of the growing trends in outdoor and indoor lighting. They've got a number of advantages, and you may have seen your friends buying or having them installed. Even better, they've gotten to the point where they're small and unobtrusive, and are much more attractive than say last year.

Solar Lights are light fixtures with a battery, a solar collector, and a small, low energy light source, like an LED or small compact fluorescent. They're usually stake lights something that can be driven into the ground without running wires through your yard , though a few use a discretely placed solar collector to run to a series of lights. In a lot of cases, the entire unit is about the size of an 8 ounce cup.

Typically, a standard solar light will of course have the light, usually enclosed in a white or clear plastic, or glass dome. Somewhere on the unit there will be a solar panel, you want this facing the sun. The run time on these varies by the charge they are able to accumulate during the day. Typically, a solar light will last for 5 hours on a decent charge, some can even last 7. There's also no danger of an electrical fire with a solar light.

Many people are buying these lights this summer for a number of reasons. Solar lights do not use power from the grid making it a cost free way to light your home. They also are rather convenient and can be placed almost anywhere provided there's sunlight available. Aside from this, the fact that they don't drain power from the grid means there's more power to go around for things like air conditioning. Air conditioning is very important during the summer months especially for those of us who have health issues.

People's homes are also looking more tasteful with the new solar lights nowadays. As stated above they aren't as big or bulky as they use to be. They also look a lot better cosmetically and can blend in with almost any scenery. They come in a variety of colors and compliment gardens, and flower arrangements very well. They also work well with porches and decks.

This can make for some interesting creative combination of outdoor displays and lights. Of course if you are strictly using them for pathway illumination that can be done as well. You can also use them as security devices and hook them up to a motion sensor. This will light up an area where any motion is detected. Nice way to keep burglars away.

While home investment budgets have been curtailed with the current economic downturn, these lights have proven to be the exception to the rule they're affordable and, and flexible, and they allow home owners to express their creativity on affordable budget. They also don't have recurring costs in the form of ongoing electric bills, and may well be the harbinger of things to come for solar powered home improvement.

In closing solar lights are a great way to save money. They are small, cheap, and efficient. They also do not take up a lot of space and are easily maintained. Plus, they look pretty nice with the proper complimentary backgrounds.
